About us

Our Story

Discover the natural beauty of Okataina Outdoor Education Centre, situated just 30 minutes from Rotorua along the Whakatane Highway. This stunning location boasts approximately 10.1905 hectares of native bush and a plethora of walkways spanning over 4,500 acres.

Since its official opening in 1975, this outdoor haven has been an integral part of New Zealand’s landscape. In fact, it was transferred to Te Pumautanga o Te Arawa Trust under the Settlement Act for transferal to Ngati Rongomai – our affiliated Iwi with deep roots in this land.

In around 2005, we were finally handed ownership but remained subject to a lease agreement with Okataina Education and Recreation Trust until June 2016 when it expired. Since then we have taken full control as proud operators on behalf of Ngati Rongomai Iwi Trust.

Come experience all that nature has to offer at Okataina Outdoor Education Centre today!
